Totally blown away by these collages by Artist Michael Mapes. In detail they are more like dioramas or those pinned insect displays. Loads more of his work on the site below.
Beautifully dark sgraffito drawing by Alice Leora Briggs for the book ‘Dreamland: The Way Out of Juarez’ by Charles Bowden. I heard the story behind ‘Dreamland’ on the always enlightening radio show ‘This American Life’ during the week.Well worth a listen, the least you’ll get is a grounding reality check from a story of tortured, murder and revenge.
I would have loved these when I was a kid. Great looking Kickstarter by Vlad Dragusin + Candylab Toys. ‘Heirloom wood toy cars, inspired by mid-century American design and car culture.’ Pretty impressive the about amount of work that goes into brining a toy to market. Follow the link below to support Candlab’s Kickstarter and watch the video.
‘Sneeze does everything a portrait shouldn’t: contorted and unflattering, Schutz sets up the serene stillness of memento just to interrupt it with high-velocity drool and repulsive gobs of snot. It’s a comic take on painting that’s just fundamentally wrong. More akin to an unfortunate photographic snapshot than honoured art tradition, Schutz uses her medium to embellish the horror of embarrassment, exaggerating a moment of inopportune affliction to a permanent monument of public ridicule.’ The Saatchi Gallery
More of her work below. WARNING, pretty gruesome birthing image at the end of the post.
