02 Simon Birch - Surface and Surface

Some dynamic large scale figurative paintings from Award winning Brighton born Hong Kong based Artist Simon Birch.

“Mesmerizing in their complexity, Simon’s works envelop the viewer and invite them to participate and interpret for themselves what lies within the rich layers of pigmentation and explosive subject matter.” Carmichael Gallery of Contemporary Art 2009

Simon Birch is also involved in a ambitious collaboratory multimedia project entitled ‘Hope and Glory’ with contributions from UNKLE, filmmaker Eric Hu, designer Douglas Young, architect Paul Kember, actor Daniel Wu, and Beijing-based artist Cang Xin.

“Birch’s monumental show explores a number of major themes that recur in the artist’s work: the idea of art as a spectacle; the fascination with circuses and fairgrounds, science fiction and mythologies; as well as a preoccupation with the traditions of craftsmanship and labour in art production.”

His work has recently been exhibited at the Carmichael Gallery of Contemporary Art in LA and is available through 10 Chancery Lane Gallery in Hong Kong. You can find an interview with Simon Birch and Artasty.com here.
