Richard Gilligan started out publishing his own skate magazines as a platform to show his work. His DIY work ethic paid off after College and several trips around the world documenting the underground international skate scene. Rich has developed a portfolio which includes editorial work for various skate magazines and other publications, Fashion and music labels including: Kindpin, Lodown, The Irish Times, SLAP, Heroin Skateboards, Dublin Fringe Festival, State, Mongrel, JD and Foto8. In 2010, Richard established JAR Studios, an independent photo studio in Dublin city centre.
Rich Gilligan worked as a studio assistant for Danny Bird in London after College, where he learnt the art of lighting which he uses with great effect to create his beautiful images. Rich gave a really great quote from the late Photographer Paul Graham at his presentation at Offset 2012 from the essay ‘Photography is easy, Photography is difficult’ you can find the essay here, well worth a read.
